Family values

It should come as a surprise to no one that our family plays a huge role in who we are. I often find myself reflecting and acknowledging the fact that I would definitely not be the person I am today if it weren’t for the people I have lived with and loved for the past eighteen years. Not only do I admire them for their individuality, but for the way they live their lives. Thanks to my family, there are four values in particular which have become an integral part of who I am and/or which I try to remember in my everyday life; empathy, respect, passion and confidence.

It is impossible to fully understand the inner workings of another person’s mind – what is possible is attempting to put yourself in another’s shoes. A teacher renowned for being wordly and wise once told me that he noticed I am very empathetic and in touch with the emotions of other people. Since he pointed it out, the more I noticed it to be true. However lately I have done my best to try even harder to always consider the feelings and viewpoints of others and use it for good – whether it is inspiring myself to be more positive or helping the others with their struggles. So often we forget that everyone is a human with a life and feelings, just like ourselves. Remembering this and understanding (even if it is only slightly) the emotions of others and the way they cope with the ups and downs of life is a beautiful part of life.

Respect – it seems fairly simple but not everyone understands the concept. To be respectful is to try your best not to offend or upset another individual/group and their privacy, beliefs or goals in life. Of course everyone has the right to disagree – but as discussed in my earlier post, there is a fine line between acknowledging and discussing a difference of opinion and totally disrespecting another person’s right to have that opinion. If you respect others, they will respect you and it is the best way to build healthy and trustworthy relationships.

When a person is truly passionate about something – whether it be a hobby, a special cause, work or even simply life – it radiates from within and everyone is drawn to that passion. If you feel strongly about something, don’t let anyone or anything hold you back. It’s not every day that a person finds something they love and enjoy enough to call it a passion.

Confidence comes hand in hand with passion, if you feel strongly about something – do not be afraid to show it. Putting yourself out their and pushing out of your comfort zone is the best way to find success and happiness. If you do it with passion and confidence, good things will surely find their way to you.

Luckily, I have my beautiful family to remind me of these ideals every day. I believe they are extremely important and huge parts of being healthy and happy, and if I could impart one piece of advice to those reading – it would be to remember and implement these values in life.
